Högl is a small family winery located in the Spitzer Graben in the Wachau run by father and son team, Josef and Georg. The Spitzer Graben is a vertiginous valley branching off from the Danube which opens out into the Waldviertel with incredibly steep, terraced vineyards. The micro-climate here is the coolest in the Wachau, producing wines of tension and explosive flavor concentration. Josef and Georg are still assisted by Georg's father, who is still out among the terraces and vines for 10-12 hours a day!
From Wachau vineyards in Weissenkirchen, Durnstein and Loiben, Högl's Federspiel Grüner Veltliner comes from 15 year-old vines planted close to the Danube on sandy soils. The grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks and kept on the lees until February of the year following the vintage. Aromatic with notes of spice, yellow plums and ripe apples, Högl's Federspeil Grüner is racy and refreshing wine that is impeccably balanced and pure. Enjoy with grilled asparagus and fried chicken.
