Stuart Smith founded Smith-Madrone Winery in 1971 on top of Spring Mountain in California. The vineyards sit at an elevation between 1,300 and 2,000 feet on steep slopes composed of mostly deep red Aiken Stoney Clay loam soils. All wines are made entirely from the winery's estate vineyards consisting of Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling and Chardonnay. Smith-Madrone is a pioneer of dry farming. The name of the estate is a tribute to the Smith brothers and the Madrone: a prominent evergreen with a red-brown trunk and branches. In the spring the tree bears lilly-of-the-valley like flower clusters and in fall orange-red berries appear.

The Spring Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc and 6% Merlot aged in 75% new French oak and 25% one-year old French oak for 18 months. Black cherry, oak and black pepper on the nose precede a layered, rich palate, where soft tannins are the backbone for flavors of forest floor, cloves, savory herbs and cassis. A long and complex finish persists with notes of loam and red fruits. These grapes grow on slopes of up to 30% at an elevation of almost 2,000 feet: this mountain pedigree insures deliciously integrated tannins and a long life span. This is Napa Cab that is a perfect accompaniment to a ribeye steak.
