| | Fiancetto Cabernet Sauvignon | Howell Mountain 2019 Napa Valley, California 14.9% ABV | Regular Price: $59 | |
It is not often that you hear the words "value" and "Napa" in the same sentence; it is more surprising to find it applied to a $50 bottle of Cab, though the 2019 Fiancetto Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon is indeed an amazing value. Napa Valley's first sub-AVA (granted appellation status in 1983), the wines from Howell Mountain are massive behemoths that deliver incredibly density and concentration. While the top names of Howell Mountain Cabernet cost more than twice as much as Fiancetto, I've found they don't offer double the quality. In fact, I bet that given a glass of each, you would be hard pressed to tell the difference! How is this possible? It's all about who you know, and Fiancetto's Ry Richards knows a lot of people... |
| Ry Richards Ry Richards refined his hand crafting complex, vibrant Cabernet Sauvignon under the tutelage of Phil Titus at Chappellet Vineyards. Ry is a Napa insider, totally dialed into the grower network. He knows which top vineyards have gone from 10-year contracts to one-year agreements, where cash on the barrel a few months before harvest might garner an incredible deal. At Fiancetto, Ry's goal is to utilize his connections to craft lush Cabernet that speaks to their place of origin. 2019 is his second vintage making wine from Howell Mountain fruit. This Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from a 30-year-old vineyard located at the northern end of the Mountain, grown on shallow, well-drained, rocky soils. |
Howell Mountain Howell Mountain AVA is one of Napa's most distinct and delicious appellations, known for producing intensely structured, full-bodied wines that age extremely well. The vineyards are situated from 1,400 to 2,000 feet, so while the valley floor is blanketed in fog, these high elevation mountain vineyards are basking in sunlight. The unique mountain microclimate provides cooler days and warmer nights compared to the valley, which combined with the volcanic ash “tufa” and iron-rich red clay soils, produce small bunches of tiny berries that yield enormous color, concentration and flavor. In the glass, the Fiancetto Howell Mountain Cabernet shows an deep ruby color with brilliant violet reflections. Aromas of blackberry jam, blueberries, gingerbread, sweet spice and tobacco explode from the glass. The palate is packed with flavors of macerated currants and blueberries alongside notes of cigar wrapper and baking spice. The tannins are powerful and thick, coating the mouth and framing the decadent concentration of fruits and lively mineral spine that permeates the wine through its long, potent finish. Enjoy with marinated or dry-rubbed steaks on the grill. |
