Olivier & Lafont Gigondas
2019
Rhône, France
15% ABV
Regular Price: $29

All the way back in 2014, I optimistically said in a newsletter, "I believe that one day I'll be able to write 'Olivier and Lafont's New Wine' and it will be sold out in a day." Thanks to the unbeatable quality and value of their wines, I can say with great pride that that prediction has just about come to true. The dream team of Gérald Lafont and Baptiste Olivier have become the Corkscrew's Rockstars of the Rhône. Every time we feature their Côtes du Rhône, Côtes de Provence Rosé or Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Rouge or Blanc), the wine always sells out quickly. And today's wine, their gorgeous Gigondas, is no exception.

Outside Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas is the most prestigious Cru in the southern Rhône, producing thrilling wines with supreme fruit expression balanced by a mineral spine that drives the wine's richness and depth. Their 2019 vintage is a stunning example of Gigondas' terroir and the quality inherent in one of the Rhône's most special regions. A perfect companion for barbecue and the grill, take advantage today and stock up on Olivier & Lafont's Gigondas for the remainder of the upcoming spring!

Rockstars of the Rhône
Gérald Lafont and Baptiste Olivier are known throughout France as two of the Rhône Valley's top oenologists. Their consulting work for many of the best estates throughout the region and in Provence has given them access to a percentage of the grape yield from some of the highest acclaimed vineyards in the region. Their collective wine-making knowledge and experience, combined with their access to some of the top fruit in the region, allows them to consistently create some of the best value wines in the Rhône today.

Elevation and Limestone
What makes the wines of Gigondas so special come down to two unique features of its terroir: high elevation and limestone soils. These two factors combine to give Gigondas more freshness and lift compared to Châteauneuf-du-Pape, though the wines still possess incredible power and richness of fruit: the 2019 vintage in particular displays wonderful elegance balanced by a superb tannin structure. A blend of 90% Grenache and 10% Syrah, Olivier & Lafont's Gigondas emits gorgeous aromas of currant, cherry and boysenberry fruits with notes of lilac, pepper and light spice combined with a lovely herbal undertone. Lush, juicy blackberry and blueberry fruit flavors are woven around a wonderful tight spine of minerality that runs from start to finish. Olivier & Lafont's Gigondas is a full-bodied red with a lovely lightness of touch highlighted by velvety smooth tannins that glide over the palate into a long, complex finish. Pair with grilled burgers, sausages and lamb or barbecue beef brisket, barbecue chicken or pulled pork.
