| | Ettore Germano Barbera d'Alba | 2020 Piedmont, Italy 14.5% ABV | Regular Price: $19 | |
You may be surprised to learn that one of my go-to wines at home isn't rosé... it isn't from Burgundy... it isn't from Bordeaux. In fact, it's not even from France! One wine that I always make certain is well-stocked at home is Barbera, the other great grape of Piedmont... For me, there is nothing quite like the purity of fresh, juicy fruit aromas and flavors, soft tannins and refreshing acidity that are found in wines made from Barbera. These wines are easy to enjoy on their own, but they really shine on the dinner table. Barbera pairs beautifully with just about anything: chicken, pork, beef, pasta, mushrooms or vegetables — not to mention it is one of the best pizza wines. Sergio Germano and his team at the Ettore Germano estate make the quintessential Barbera d'Alba — a perfect expression of the grape's range, refreshment and drinkability. Though it is not only the wine's alluring freshness that is appealing; there is complexity, length and depth, all adding to its splendor. The meticulous work of Sergio and his team in both the vineyards and the cellar is abundantly clear in this gorgeous wine. After one sip, you'll see why I can't live without it. |
| Germano Tradition The Germano estate, founded in 1856 by Francis Germano, began as a wine-growing property, and it quickly established itself as one of the premier wine-growing estates in all of Piedmont. Sergio's father, Ettore, was long recognized as a master grafter of the region and producers all over the appellation paid him by the vine to replant their vineyards. Today, Sergio runs the estate, and it comes as no surprise that he has emerged as one of the best producers in Piedmont. After taking over in 1993, he merged his formidable technical winemaking knowledge with his family's great terroir, old vines and incredible tradition, creating an estate that has become among the very best in the region. |
A Brilliant Barbera The Ettore Germano Barbera d'Alba is made from hand-harvested Barbera that is destemmed and fermented in stainless steel tanks, then aged in tank for a few months before bottling in the spring following the vintage. Sergio's expression of Barbera is light, bright and quaffable; easy to drink and bursting with fruit flavors, a classic example of how delicious wines from this area can be. In the glass, the wine shows a brilliant ruby color with violet reflections. The nose is extraordinarily expressive with a medley of fresh red fruits with a touch of spice and earth. In the mouth, this wine is soft and refreshing with a svelte body that glides effortlessly over the palate into a subtle, complex and refreshing finish. Enjoy this wine with assorted salumi, pasta in tomato sauce, or chicken cacciatore. |
