There is something truly special about Alsace wine! The intoxicating combination of ethereal aromas, brilliant acidity and rich textures make my mouth water just writing about them. Any conversation about the wines of Alsace must include Riesling and you cannot discuss Alsatian Riesling without mentioning Domaine Bott Frères. I have been enamored with this estate since I started working with them many years ago. Proprietors Laurent and Nicole Bott manage the nearly two-century old property with proper respect to tradition and terroir, pouring their heart and soul into producing high-quality wine that comes through clearly in every sip. Whenever I am in Alsace, I make sure I pay them a visit, as it is always a highlight of my trip. And when Nicole Bott comes to visit the Princeton Corkscrew, it is invariably one of the most anticipated tastings on the calendar. All the Bott wines are absolutely stunning — but their Tradition Riesling impresses most of all. This is the last call for the stunning 2017 vintage, a wine that is drinking beautifully at 5-years-old, delivering an unbelievable combination of complexity, depth and value. It is also a brilliant white wine to enjoy with the rich, warming dishes of winter: Gigi and I recently drank a bottle alongside braised pork chops with apples and onions: Delicious! |
| Domaine Bott Frères Domaine Bott Frères is located in the village of Ribeauvillé, in the heart of Alsace. Since 1835, some of the oldest wine know-how has been transmitted from generation to generation; father to son. The Bott family does not manufacture wine, they cultivate it. On the estate's vineyards, seven varieties are grown and produced in a wide array of soils with the subsequent wines made in a range of styles. The grape harvest is undertaken manually and the output is monitored in order to produce high quality wines. Aging takes place in large, century-old oak casks. The results are some of the most food friendly and distinctive wines from Alsace. |
The King of Alsace Riesling is known as the King of Alsace: the grape that is most planted in the vineyards and most celebrated by producers and consumers alike. Domaine Bott Frères Tradition Riesling is beautifully aromatic with enchanting notes of lime juice, flowers, butterscotch, toasted honey and an intriguing mineral tone. The palate is loaded with crackling acidity and a complex mix of flavors that include quince, honeycomb, lime sherbet and Ruby Red grapefruit, not to mention notes of river stones and a steely mineral core. There is an intriguing texture to the wine that provides a river bed for the all the exciting flavors to flow into a clean, bright and energetic finish. Enjoy with smoked fish, sausage and cabbage, or an Alsace speciality: Flammekueche, a bacon and onion tart. |
