Château Sainte Roseline
Le Cloître
Côtes de Provence Cru Classé
2016
Provence
France

Regular Price: $19

Back in April, we kicked off rosé season with the first-ever Cru Classé Côtes de Provence in the shop. I knew the wine was great, and so did all of you, because we sold out of it in a short amount of time. Selfishly, I was disappointed that there hasn't been any around for the heat of the summer, especially as we approach tomato season. There was more than one occasion when I would be making dinner with Gigi and think to myself how delicious Château Sainte Roseline rosé would be with the meal! After badgering my friend who supplies the wine, I was able to secure another shipment just in time for the dog days of summer. For those of you who enjoyed it earlier in the spring, or for those of you who missed out, here's another chance to enjoy one of the classic rosé wines of Provence.

Holy Rosé

Château Sainte Roseline is one of the most historic and prestigious estates in all of the Côtes de Provence. The terroir dates back over 1,000 years, with some vineyards created by Pope Jean XXII in the 14th century. The estate is named after Sainte Roseline (born in 1263) who was the daughter of a Marquis and who stole food during a famine from the family stores to feed the poor. When her father tried to catch her, the food she was hiding in her apron miraculously turned into an armful of bright roses! Sainte Roseline's body is displayed in the chapel that was built after her death in 1329 and still is visited by pilgrims today.

The terroir is unmatched with its clay and limestone soil as well as an underground spring, which allows a steady source of water for the vines, allowing perfect balance to be achieved almost every year. The history of the estate, combined with its excellent vineyards and delectable wines, is why Château Sainte Roseline is one of only eighteen Provençal estates that are ranked as Cru Classé.

In a Classé All Its Own

The 2016 Le Cloître is a blend of 50% Cinsault, 20% Grenache, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Mourvèdre. In the glass, the wine emanates a brilliant translucent pink with copper highlights. Aromas and flavors of red berry and tropical fruits intermingle with savory herbs and rocky mineral notes. The Cru Classé pedigree is evident in the flavor concentration and rich mouthfeel of the wine, while maintaining a thirst-quenching, bright and vibrant acidity. I suppose that having popes and saints as part of your history blesses the wines year after year! Easy to enjoy on its own, the Château Sainte Roseline is also perfect with all types of seafood from ocean perch to octopus to swordfish, but would pair equally well with a full-flavored summer salad. I'm very happy we got more so I can enjoy it when my tomatoes are ready to eat!
