There are only a few things that can make me raise my arms in the air and jump for joy...

A year and a half ago, I had the pleasure of having lunch with Victoire of Château Angélus, one of only four Premier Grand Cru Classé "A" estates in Saint-Émilion, where we tasted their 2010 and 2011 vintages. The wines were absolutely stunning, particularly the 2010, of which I bought all that she would offer me (to this day it is still one of the best wines I have tasted in my life). Over the course of our lunch, we discussed the Château and their wines, Angélus and Le Carillon d'Angélus, the second label of the estate. It was then I learned something truly amazing: the Château makes a third label, No. 3 d'Angélus. Its production is so confidential, I had no idea the wine even existed!

Victoire told me that it has never been sold in the USA, and is only available to a select group of family clients in France and VIPs who visit the estate. I immediately knew I had to find a way to get some for my customers. I kept in touch with Victoire, constantly asking her if any No. 3 was available, inevitably receiving no as the answer. My persistence seemed to be working though, because I received a gorgeous card inviting me to the estate for Angélus' en primeur tasting, an extremely exclusive offer extended to people like Robert Parker and Jancis Robinson. Regrettably, I had to decline the invitation, but again, I made sure to mention my continued interest in No. 3 d'Angélus. After not hearing any news for awhile, I started to believe it wasn't meant to be. But a couple months ago, I received a phone call from Victoire. After speaking with her family, they decided, for the first time, to allow a shipment of the wine to America! I immediately leapt out of my chair, raised my arms, and jumped for joy. I am esctatic to present to you, for the first, and possibly only time in the country, No. 3 d'Angélus.

The Legendary Estate
The earliest references to the Boüard de Laforest family, proprietors of Château Angélus, can be found in Saint-Émilion in 1544. The estate was bequeathed to Comte Maurice de Boüard de Laforest in 1909, and expansions in 1926 and 1969 have brought the current property to just over 27 hectares. The vineyards are situated in a natural amphitheater with a southerly exposure, located at the esteemed "foot of the hill" where Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon are grown in soils composed of sandstone, limestone and clay. Three Saint-Émilion churches overlook the vineyards, their bells tolling the angelus peal, or call to prayer, which is amplified throughout the vineyards of the Château, and give the estate its symbol and name. Château Angélus is currently managed by Hubert de Boüard de Laforest, who joined the family business in 1976 after concluding his studies at the Faculté d'Oenologie in Bordeaux under the tutelage of Émile Peynaud, the forefather of modern oenology. Hubert's techniques in the vineyard are at the cutting edge of modern viniculture, employing incredibly precise and labor intensive methods to grow, and then select, the perfect grapes for each vintage. The devotion in the vineyard and cellar have resulted in Château Angélus attaining Premier Grand Cru Classé "A" status in 2012, joining Châteaux Pavie, Cheval Blanc and Ausone as the only Saint-Émilion estates to receive this distinction.

No. 3 d'Angélus
No. 3 d'Angélus is a blend of 85% Merlot, balanced with Cabernet Franc, that is made for instant enjoyment. All of the same practices in the the vineyard and cellar that are put into the Grand Vin and Le Carillon d'Angélus (the estate's second label) are also used in the production of No. 3 d'Angélus. The wine does not see any new oak, instead only one- to three-year-old barrels are used. This Saint-Émilion Grand Cru pours an eye-catching light ruby in the glass. Entrancing aromas of ripe red currant, red berries and plum, accented with a touch of pepper and subtle floral notes waft effortlessly from the glass, dazzling the olfactory senses. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied with perfectly balanced acidity and soft, velvety tannins; its fruit is the perfect level of ripeness. The volume of the wine is expansive but restrained, perfectly attuned to all its structural components. This is the epitome of Merlot: suave, lush and silky. Effortless to drink, No. 3 d'Angélus shows the immaculate pedigree of the estate, the attention to detail present at all parts of the winemaking process and how the utmost dedication and commitment will produce a wine that is nothing short of amazing. And this is the Château's third label! This is an excellent way to experience the terroir of one of the best wine producers not only in Bordeaux and all of France, but in the entire world.

This may be the only time No. 3 d'Angélus is available in the United States. I have received a limited allocation, once it is gone I will not be able to get more. The wine has been shipped directly from the estate to the shop at cellar temperature and is in perfect condition. Be sure to take advantage of this unbelievable opportunity! Enjoy $46 per bottle for this week only (5/11/17 through 5/7/17) or until the wine sells out.
