Schödl is a family estate located in Weinviertel run by three siblings — Mathias, Viktoria and Leonhard — who have travelled all over the wine-producing regions of the world from New Zealand to South Africa and New York to California. They converted their vineyards around the town of Loidesthal to organic production and incorporate biodynamic practices as well. The siblings focus on biodiversity, planting wild herbs, grasses and chamomile between the rows of vines to encourage beneficial insects such as butterflys, ladybirds and earthworms. Only natural compost is used as fertilizer.
The Schödl Dorflagen is made from 100% St. Laurent, sourced from their vineyard plots in Loidesthal and Blumenthal on sandstone and chalky loess soils. All the grapes are destemmed and fermented in stainless steel with native yeasts, after which the wine was aged in large 2000 L oak fuders. Spicy and bursting with red berry fruits, the Dorflagen St. Laurent is soft and refreshing; an excellent food wine, particularly with heavily spiced meals like chicken paprika.
