Matt Cline has gone back to his roots with Three Wine Company. Together with his wife, Erin, they focus on making wine from old vines of California's "heritage" varietals: Zinfandel, Mataro, Carignane, Alicante Buschet and Petite Sirah. Matt believes that the dirt, the micro-climate and sustainable wine growing form the cornerstone of good winemaking and these three elements are in every bottle Three Wine Company produces. Matt focuses his energies on working with the old-vine plantings in places few growers and winemakers find interesting, mainly in the sandy soils of Contra Costa County. It is because of this dedication and diligence that Matt is able to source fruit from vines that are over 100 years old!
Matt's Faux Pas, a 47% Carignane, 39% Zinfandel, 14% Petite Sirah blend, is the product of a rosé and a red wine, each fermented separately in stainless steel. The rosé was predominantly Zinfandel with a touch of Carignane; the red, a blend of Carignane and Petite Sirah. All fruit was sourced from vines of 130+ years of age. After the wines were assembled, the resultant wine was aged for four months in stainless steel before bottling without fining. This wine sits a light crimson in the glass. With a few swirls, your senses are rewarded with high-toned red fruit aromas — bing cherry, raspberry, pomegranate. The Faux Pas is a delight on the palate... bright and juicy with a touch of minerality and fine acidity. With the warmer months coming, be sure to put this bottle on ice to give it a chill. Absolutely refreshing!
