Gonçalo Sousa Lopes' eponymous estate was founded in the 1920's by Gonçalo's great-great grandfather. It originally consisted of two quintas- the 9 hectare Quinta do Cruzero and Quinta da Senra, with 7 hectares- until Gonçalo's grandfather purchased the Casa da Torre, adding 5 more hectares and a winery and bringing the estate to its current size.
The wines of Sousa Lopes display true old-vine character and faithful expression of terroir. Gonçalo farms 35-40 year old vines of Arinto, Alvarinho, and Loureiro, varieties native to the region, planted on soils of granite and schist. Vineyard management is conducted as naturally as possible; yields are limited, and biodiversity is allowed to flourish amongst the vines. Winemaking is traditional as well, with fermentation taking place in stainless steel tanks with native yeasts.
A pale straw color, with aromas of citrus and stone fruits mixed with crushed gravel and white pepper. The palate is crisp, vibrant and juicy, dominated by flavors of yellow plum, apricot and lime zest. There is a beautiful balance of invigorating acidity and wet stone minerality here, and a wonderfully lively finish. Delicious on its own, this is a slam dunk with anything from the sea.
