Rockledge is a micro-negociant that produces high quality, boutique Cabernet Sauvignon at a great price. This is a wine that rarely finds its way to the east coast.
Like many of Washington's growing regions, Horse Heaven Hills is a geological miracle: a series of wrinkles in the earth that create slopes — some as high as 1000 feet! — that are ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon grape growing. These slopes of stratified basalt rock force roots to search deep to find water, as the Horse Heaven Hills appellation sees an average of only nine inches of rainfall per year. In addition, vines are battered by persistent winds, a product of the eastern desert climate meeting the western Pacific, resulting in a maelstrom of crazy, constant wind. Yet these winds help reduce canopy size and thicken grapes skins, as well as protect the vines against insects, rot and mildew. The resulting grapes are tiny and jam-packed with flavor concentration.
The 2020 Rockledge Horse Heaven Hills Cabernet Sauvignon pours a vibrant violet color to its rim. The nose just blasts from the glass, redolent of blackberries, cassis and baking spices. On the palate, the wine is rich and full-bodied with absolutely pristine fruit — like a bowl of blackberries kissed with graphite and sweet tobacco. Drink anytime with the cuisine of spring: Alpine cheeses, burgers and sausages off the grill or roasted lamb.
