Located in the northern plains of Alentejo, MAINOVA was established in 2020 by the Monteiro family after they acquired the Herdade da Fonte Santa property in 2010. The winery was born after Bárbera Monteiro, the youngest of three sisters, dedicated a full decade of work to the estate's vineyard and olive grove. The name comes from the Portugeuse colloquialism "a mais nova" which means the youngest girl. Bárbara sustainably farms 20 hectares of vines — with 2.5 hectares in organic conversion — on schistic/granitic soils. Along with winemaker Antonio Maçanita, Bárbera combines innovation, modern methods and the traditions of Alentejo winemaking to craft unique, indigenous variety wines. Harvest is done manually at night and fermentation is spontaneously with minimal intervention and low sulfur use in the cellar. Packaging is created with low environmental impact, using 100% recycled glass and labels.
MAINOVA's Tinto is a rich blend of Alicante Bouschet, Touriga Nacional and Baga. The wine sits in the glass a beautiful ruby red color highlighted with violet reflections. Aromas of dark red and black berry fruits release with a gentle swirl, intertwining with notes of black pepper, eucalyptus and dried earth. The palate is full and structured displaying spiced mixed berry jam (black raspberry, blackberry, cherry) with notes of forest floor and purple flowers. This wine is smooth and complex with well-integrated tannins and textured finish. Perfect for red meats off the grill.
