Château Kirwan's beginnings can be traced to the English merchant Sir John Collingwood, one of the first négociants in history, who acquired two vineyards, de Lasalle and Ganet, in Cantenac and Margaux. His daughter married an Irishman, Mark Kirwan, who inherited the vineyards in 1760 and made them one estate: Château Kirwan. 1855 the Château was classified as a Troisième Cru, or 3rd Growth. After a period of instability the estate was left to the City of Bordeaux, who eventually sold it to the Shÿler family, who still run it today.
The Château's vineyards consist of about 40 hectares planted to 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Petit Verdot on a mix of gravel based soils with plots of clay, sandy-clay, and clay-limestone. All grapes are hand-harvested and hand-sorted. On average, the wines of Kirwan enjoy 40% new French oak for 20 months.
