Le Marie is a small family winery owned and operated by Valerio Raviolo and his wife, Luigina, alongside their children, Daniele and Simona. The winery and cellar are in Barge, an ancient village at the foot of Monte Viso in southwest Piedmont near the French border. The Raviolo's organically farm 9.5 hectares of vineyards scattered over 14 plots at elevations between 400-450 meters on soils of red clay on schist. These soils, combined with the cool, marginal climate of the region, result in remarkably fresh and bright wines that are unique compared to the rest of Piedmont. In addition to the classic Piemontese varieties of Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto, Freisa, Bonarda, and Arneis, the family grows a handful of unusual, local varieties such as Chatus, Neretta Cuneese, and Malvasia Moscata. These are authentic wines made in a minimal style with respect for tradition and the territory's incredibly long history of viticulture.
Le Maria Debárges is made of 100% Nebbiolo from the estate's vineyards in the DOC Pinerolese, which comprises just 30 hectares of vineyards in the foothills of the western Alps, near the French border. The 1-hectare vineyard is 20 years old on mineral-rich red clays on schist soils. All grapes are destemmed and fermented with native yeasts in stainless steel tanks, then aged in tank for 8-10 months followed by an additional 12 months aging in 2,500-liter Slavonian oak botti. Light ruby color with expressive aromas of violet, dark berries and wild strawberry. The palate is overflowing with flavors of raspberries, cherries, cloves, roses and nutmeg with grippy tannins and an enticing mineral lift. Enjoy alongside a plate of ravioli in a savory sauce.
