William Goldschimdt spent five years in Burgundy working with Jean-Marc Roulot, David Croix and David Duband. Upon returning to Chianti and Corzano e Paterno, William was inspired to embark on a new project, using Burgundian farming and winemaking techniques (high-density planting, whole-cluster fermentation, minimal use of SO2 and the use of small barriques) to focus on single-vineyard expressions of Sangiovese. First, he purchased an abandoned vineyard in Castelnuovo Berandenga at a dizzying 550 meters of elevation. William completed replanted this terraced site in 2020 and he expects the first vintage to be released in 2026. Simultaneous to the purchase in Castelnuovo, William rented a parcel in Panzano from the Davaz family at Poggio al Sole. This tiny, mature vineyard rooted in schist and limestone was entirely worked by hand by William and he produced his first wine in 2020.
The 2020 Clivo Altura La Debuttante is remarkably fine, wound-up Sangiovese with complex aromatics of red flowers, bright berries and earth. The mid-palate is packed with concentrated fruit flavors supported by firm tannins. Time in glass reveals layer upon layer of incredible depth and fruitiness leading to a mineral-tinged finish that is elegant and seemingly endless. Enjoy with homemade pizza — any style — this wine will pair wonderfully. For a treat, try rosemary-crusted lamb chops with a creamy polenta.
