Over the last 20 years, the world-famous sweet wine appellation, Sauternes, has undergone a quiet revolution. Most Châteaux now have a program of making dry wines from their vineyards of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. At first glance, this may seem crazy. Yet, it actually makes perfect sense: not only is this one of the best terroirs in the world for growing Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc, but commercially, dry wine will always sell better than sweet wine. The dry whites from this part of Bordeaux are, without question, among the most complex, age-worthy and unique wines found anywhere in the world. Château Guiraud, the legendary Sauternes estate, has been making a dry white, G de Guiraud, for a few years. While I have always adored their sweet wines, I have never had the opportunity to try their dry wines. Earlier this year, I tasted a bottle in France and saw that the Château's demanding standards for the production of their sweet wines was just as high with their dry wines. With the 2018 vintage, Guiraud has created an exemplary Bordeaux Blanc that highlights the aromatic intensity, balance and complexity these wines offer. What's more is the unbelievable value to found: at only $20 a bottle, you cannot find a wine that delivers such quality at such price from such an illustrious producer! |
| Château Guiraud  Château Guiraud was originally known as La Maison Noble du Bayle before the Guiraud family took over the estate in 1766. The vineyards sit on 100 hectares which are planted to 65% Semillon and 35% Sauvignon Blanc — a very high percentage for the region — on a blend of sand, gravel, clay and limestone soils. In 2011, Château Guiraud was certified organic by Agence Bio, though they have been practicing organic since 1996. Today, the estate is owned by four of the leading figures in Bordeaux: Xavier Planty (the president of the Sauternes and Barsac appellations and winemaker at Guiraud since 1984), Robert Peugeot (President and General Manager of FFP), Stephan Von Neipperg (who runs the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé Chateaux Cannon La Gaffelière and La Mondotte), and Olivier Bernard (President of the Union des Grand Crus and manager of Domaine de Chevalier in Graves). Their experience, expertise and passion continue to make Château Guiraud one of the top estates in Bordeaux. |
Drinks Like a Dream  G de Guiraud is a blend of 50% Sauvignon Blanc and 50% Sémillon from a specific 15 hectare plot of vines. The grapes are fermented in 80% oak barrels that were the previous vintages Sauternes' Grand Vin and 20% stainless steel. The wine ages for seven months in barrel with regular stirring of the lees, which imparts a textural richness and complexity to the finished wine. In the glass, G de Guiraud exhibits a brilliant gold color with lemon highlights strewn throughout. The nose is powerfully aromatic with captivating aromas of rich tropical fruits, nettles and fresh herbs, all underpinned by a savory spice note. On the palate, the wine delivers incredible concentration of quince, apricot, mango and baked apple flavors that intermingle with savory oak spice and herbal notes that are framed by a rich, round body and perfectly balanced by a soft, integrated acidity. The finish is long, decadent and enchanting as the ripe fruit flavors intermingle with notes oak that call you back to the glass for another sip. This is an absolutely brilliant white Bordeaux that drinks like a dream! |
