When wine professionals, historians or passionate drinkers discuss the history of California wine — Sonoma County in particular — there are a handful of families and farmers whose names illicit sighs of reverence and nods of admiration. One of them is undoubtedly the Martinelli family, who have been grape-growers in the Russian River Valley and Fort Ross-Seaview for five generations, going all the way back to the 1880's! The family sells 90% of their fruit to the top producers in the region — their client list reads like an all-star team — only making a miniscule amount of wine to sell under their own label. As a result, the focus always has been, and always will be, on the land, the vines and the fruit. The small amount of wine they make is quickly snatched up by private clients and top restaurants: these are some of the original cult wines of California! I am extremely fortunate to be able to offer you, for the first time in 25 years, three different wines from this iconic California wine family. Each wine embodies a distinct identity, sense of place and is a treasure of American history, farming and winemaking. |
| A Thriving Family Legacy The Martinelli family's grape-growing history begins in the 1880's, when Giuseppe Martinelli and Luisa Vellutini eloped from their small village in Tuscany and moved to California. Since that time, there has always been a member of the Martinelli family farming grapes and making wine in Sonoma County. Though, it hasn't always been wine: previous generations were known for managing apple orchards, potato fields and hop farms throughout the area. Today, Lee Martinelli Sr. is the primary owner and farmer for the family's vineyards, along with his four children, Juliana, Lee Jr., George and Regina. All of their vineyards and winery are certified sustainable with the goal to improve the quality of the land and lives of the workers. Ultimately, the Martinelli's want to keep Sonoma County a premier wine region, and to ensure they can continue to pass the land down for generations, further building upon their thriving family legacy. |
Zio Tony Ranch Vineyard, Russian River Valley The Zio Tony Ranch Vineyard is named Tony Bondi, Lee Martinelli Sr.'s uncle, who used to be a large apple rancher in Sonoma. Today, the vines, planted in Goldridge soils of clay and loam, on this former orchard create some of the most voluptuous and full-bodied Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah in the Martinelli range. | 2017 Chardonnay "The 2017 Chardonnay Zio Tony Ranch is a powerful, phenolic wine, with a real sense of structure that gives the wine its distinctive personality. Lemon peel, sage, mint, dried flowers, tangerine and lightly honeyed notes grow into a crescendo of aromas, flavors and textures. The Zio Tony Ranch Chardonnay is so classy and so distinctive." 95 points -- Antonio Galloni's Vinous Media | 2018 Pinot Noir "The 2018 Pinot Noir Zio Tony Ranch is a magnificent wine that captures all of the Martinelli signatures. Super-ripe red cherry, red plum, blood orange, mint and spice build in a sumptuous, beautifully layered Pinot that dazzles from start to finish. The mix of six different clones is one of the factors that yields a Pinot of stunning complexity. Wow!" 97 points -- Antonio Galloni's Vinous Media | Bondi Home Ranch Vineyard, Green Valley of Russian River Valley When Lee Sr.'s great grandparents, Gemma & Paulo Bondi, came to California from Italy in 1880, they started the Bondi Ranch. Originally planted to potatoes and then apples, the vineyard's Goldridge soils of clay and loam are now home to Pinot Noir vines of 20+ years of age. The vineyard is located just outside the town of Sebastopol in the Green Valley. | 2018 Pinot Noir "The 2018 Pinot Noir Bondi Home Ranch is an intriguing wine. This site, in the cold Sebastopol Hills, is early to go through bud break and late to ripen. That long growing season yields a Pinot with intense, ripe flavors and bright acids, a combination that at times is very Zinfandel-like in its inflections. Dried flowers, leather, mint, cedar and earthy tones add myriad shades of nuance. This is such a striking and alluring Pinot." 96 pts -- Antonio Galloni's Vinous Media |
