Josef "Pepi" Umathum is one of Austria's best-known producers. His 60 hectares of vineyards are located around Neusiedlersee in Burgenland where he grows Zweigelt, St. Laurent, Blaufränkisch, Welschriesling, Roter Traminer, the extremely rare Gelber Traminer, and the unusual, ancient Lindenblättrige on a variety of different soils. Umathum has embraced biodynamic viticulture, manually harvests all his fruit and uses large barrels of Austrian oak to ferment and age his wines.
Umathum's Roter (redder) and Gelber (yellower) Traminer is a blend of grapes from two biodynamic vineyards of 40+ year-old vines, grown on sand and loam soils near Neusiedlersee and fermented in old Austrian wood casks. Meticulous farming, hand-harvesting and minimal intervention in the cellar result in an absolutely gorgeous wine. This wine displays the perfect combination of the honey and white flower attributes of Gelber Traminer and the spice and rose petal notes of thicker-skinned Roter Traminer. Dry and incredibly aromatic, enjoy on its own or pair with spicy dishes.
