Stephan Steinmetz took over his 6 hectare family estate in the Mosel in 1992, when he was only 22 years old. Today, along with his wife, Petra, and two young children, the Steinmetz family make a range of enticing dry and sparkling wines from Elbling, Weissburgunder and Grauburgunder. All vineyard work is done by hand with great attention to detail and a respectful approach to nature. The wines are vinified and aged in stainless steel. In both the vineyard and the cellar, Stephan and family intervene as little as possible while working as sustainably as they can. These wines are literally hand made. The results are some truly stunning wines and incredible values in the Mosel.
Elbling is one of the oldest grapes in Europe, planted in the Mosel Valley since at least the time of the Romans. Today, only a smattering of vineyards remain on the chalky, limestone soils of the Upper Mosel, coaxed to ripeness by dedicated farmers like Stephan Steinmetz. Light lemon in the glass with aromas of fresh cut citrus, citrus zest, chalk and white flowers. The palate is light and racy with crystalline acidity that brings incredible refreshment and zing. The Steinmetz Elbling is a simple wine that is a labor of love and a living memory of a historic varietal that delivers low alcohol wines impressive vigor and energy. Enjoy with raw seafood, tempura vegetables or a beautiful afternoon.
