Weingut Roterfaden was founded in 2014 by Hannes Hoffmann and Olympia Samara: he from Rosswag, where their vineyards and cellar are located; she from Greece. They met while studying oenology at Geisenheim, fell in love, and travelled and worked in California, South Africa, Austria, Spain and Greece, hoping to find the perfect place to set up a small, hands on estate for themselves. Eventually, they realized that what they were looking for is right in front of them: Rosswag, northwest of Stuttgart, in Swabia, Hannes' hometown. Today, Hannes and Olympia biodynamically farm 4 hectares of Lemberger, Pinot Noir and Riesling on steep, terraced vineyards of pure limestone. All work in the vineyards and cellar is done by hand. Winemaking is minimalist: native yeast fermentation, aging in old barrels, no fining or filtration and small additions of sulfur prior to bottling.
The Roterfaden and Rosswag is a vineyard project collaboration between Hannes, Olympia and the Rosswag cooperative. Most of the terreaced vineyards in Rosswag are farmed by co-op memebers; Roterfaden is the one exception. Together, they have made a blend of Lemberger, Trollinger, Regent, Schwarzriesling (Pinot Meunier) from these exceptional limestone vineyards.
Light garnet in the glass with ruby highlights, this unique blend of grapes produces startling aromas of sour cherry, fresh raspberry and violets alongside an alluring stony mineral note. On the palate, the wine features a lively, refreshing acidity and narrow, energetic tannins that provide lift and depth to the fresh fruit and mineral flavors as they cascade across the palate into a rocky, lip-smacking finish. Enjoy with Maultaschen (pasta dough enclosed with meat, spinach, bread crumbs and onions) or Kässpätzle, a spätzle casserole cooked with Emmentale and Gruyère cheeses and roasted onions.
