Luís Patrão organically farms just over 3 hectares of vines on the Bairrada region on Portugal with his girlfriend, Eduarda, and his father, Dinis. Luís has two vineyards, one planted to white varietals, and his other, Barrio, is planted to the local red varietal, Baga, on chalky clay soils, with some very old vines. All wines are made in a converted warehouse.
The Vadio Bairrada is made from 100% Baga. All grapes are harvested manually and fermented with natural yeasts, then aged in French and American oak barrels for 18 months followed by a further 18 months in bottle. This wine is very similar to Nebbiolo, with flavors of bright red fruits, roses and deep earthy tones with notes of spice. It also ages well, as this 2009 vintage can show. The aromas and flavors develop into a more complex whole as the tannins meld into the wine and the acidity softens, though the wine still shows plenty of concentration, complexity and persistence. Enjoy with linguica sausage, suckling pig or a dry-aged steak.
