In 1946, Joaquín Mateos de la Higuera purchased his family's first parcel of Tempranillo vines in the Mara Antona sub-region of La Mancha. Over the next 40 years, Joaquín and his family grew their vineyards to a total of 85 hectares of assorted red and white grapes. In 2005, the three Mateos de la Higuera brothers began to bottle a small portion of their own wine instead of selling to the local co-op. This lead to subsequent modernization of the cellar, although the brothers have managed to honor the time-tested practices of their parents and grandparents by achieving a perfect balance of modernity and tradition. Their vineyards consist mainly of old-vine Tempranillo, but they also have Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot planted for red wines and Airén, Macabeo and Verdejo planted for white wines. The family's goal is to make aromatic, fruit-forward wines that highlight the characteristics of their vineyards and La Mancha.
The Vega Demara is made from 100% Tempranillo grown in La Mancha D.O. of Spain from vines that are over 35 years of age. After the Mateos de la Higuera family made some changes in their wine-making, the 2018 Vega Demara won a number of gold medals at different tasting competitions in Spain and internationally. Deep ruby in color, the Vega Demara emits bright aromas of violet, cherry and strawberry with a touch of spice. On the palate, the wine is very well-balanced with mouth-coating tannins and a delicate acidity that gently cleanses the palate after each sip. The fruit is fresh and concentrated, leading into a satisfying and persistent finish.
