Società Agricola Tempa di Zoè - Diciotto 2020
Tempa di Zoè is the project of Bruno di Conciliis, one of Cilento's most celebrated farmers and winemakers in Campania, Italy. Bruno is a pioneer of organic and biodynamic farming in the region as well as energy conservation (particularly his advocacy of solar power) and environmental responsibility. He is a leading figure in the rejuvenation of Cilento's vineyards and one of the region's greatest champions of its wines made from native grapes like Fiano and Aglianico. The soil here is different from the volcanic soils elsewhere in Campania. Instead, the soils are sand based because the land was under the sea for so long. These sandy soils are gold in color with sedimentary schist layering of sandstone and marl, which results in the distinct saline, savory mineral spine in the region's Fiano and Aglianico wines.
The 18 Diciotto from Tempa di Zoè is made from 100% Aglianico from two different vineyards on the Cilento coast: one on schist soils, the other sand and clay. All grapes are hand harvested and fermented in stainless steel tanks and aged for one year in one-third oak barrels and two-thirds stainless steel. The wine is unfined and there are no sulfites added until bottling. Deep ruby color with garnet highlights. On the nose aromas of spice, mulberries, pepper and balsamic explode from the glass. The palate shows a remarkable softness balanced by an alluring freshness and surprising polish. The finish is an exciting mix of power and elegance. Enjoy with surf and turf, steak and lasagna.
