Angelos Rouvalis founded the Rouvalis Winery in 1990 in Patras, Peloponnese. Angelos was one of the pioneers of the quality wine renaissance in Greece in the 1990's. Today, the winery is run by Theodora Rouvalis and her partner, Αntonio Ruiz Pañego, both trained oenologists, who have worked all around the world, including in Burgundy for 3 years, where they tended some of the most prestigious Grand Cru vineyards in Morey-Saint-Denis. Their aim is to produce authentic, harmonious and value-oriented wines that express the unique terroir of the slopes of Aigialeia in northern Peloponnese.
Tsigello is a low-yielding clone of the Greek grape Mavrodaphne, first made as a varietal wine by Rouvalis in 2017. The grapes are grown at altitudes between 500 to 600 meters on sandy loam and sandy clay loam soils. The grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks and aged in 85% clay amphoras and 15% used oak barrels for 5 months and bottled unfiltered. Vibrant aromas of fresh red berry fruits alongside an intriguing savory, herbaceous quality plume from the glass. The wine is full-bodied but not heavy; the clay amphora gives the wine a distinct lift and energy as well as softening the tannins of Tsigello. Flavors of red fruits, pepper, rosemary, bay leaf and eucalyptus with hints of chocolate permeate the palate and finish. Enjoy with baked lamb marinated in herbs.
