Quinta Vale Dona Maria's history goes back to 1868 in the Cima Corgo in the Vale do Rio Torto in Portugal's Douro Valley, though the modern history begins in 1996 when Cristiano van Zeller and his wife took over the property from his wife's family. Today, Aveleda owns the quinta, though Cristiano continues to make the wine and carry on his tradition of excellence. The Quinta Vale Dona Maria vineyards cover 36 hectares of old vines planted to 41 different varietals. All vines are farmed sustainably with an emphasis on biodiversity, healthy vineyard soils and balance of the vines and their environment.
Quinta Vale Dona Maria's Reserva Porto is a blend of traditional Douro varietals. All grapes are hand harvested and foot trodden in traditional granite lagares, fortified with grape brandy and aged in 100-year-old wooden casks. Deep, almost opaque ruby color with purple highlights. Aromas of sweet black fruits and purple flowers are mirrored on the powerful, complex palate. This is a fantastic Ruby Port that punches well above its weight.
