In 1969 Jay Corley came to the Napa Valley to find land in which to plant an estate vineyard and make wine. Today, Monticello Vineyards is still owned and operated by the Corley family. Their over-riding philosophy is that great wines are made in the vineyards. The family farms five vineyards in the Napa Valley in Oak Knoll, Yountville, Rutherford and St. Helena planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc and Syrah.
The Corley Proprietary Red is a wine the family made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, that is delicious upon release, but would also age beautifully. The fruit comes from their Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards in Yountville, Rutherford and St Helena and Merlot grown on their two vineyards in the Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley. They planted three different clones of Cabernet Franc (Clone 'X', #332 and #312) alongside their Merlot on the two Oak Knoll vineyards. The 2006 Proprietary Red has aged beautifully and gracefully, with flavors of cassis, leather and tobacco framed by integrated tannins and a soft acidity. The finish is long and complex. A compelling wine and reminder that Napa reds can age wonderfully.
