Rui Walter da Cunha got his start in winemaking cleaning tanks and mopping the floor of his grandfather’s Port house when he was 16. While attending the University of Trás-as-Montes e Alto Douro, Rui met viticulturist Gonçalo Lopes, and their shared interest in terroir and sustainability led them, in 1996, to form Lacrau. The wines come from the Quinta da Faisca, Rui and Gonçalo’s 17.5 ha estate located in the central Cima Corgo of the Douro. The name Lacrau comes from the Arabic al-'aqrab, which refers to an invertebrate arthropod animal similar to a scorpion. Lacrau is the only scorpion in Portugal, distributed throughout the national territory, from Trás-os-Montes in the north to the Algarve in the south, and is often found in arid areas, sunny areas on, under and around rocks. Look out!
The Lacrau branco is a blend of Gouveio, Rabigato, Verdelho, Viosinho, Moscatel Galego Branco grown in schist and clay-loam soils of the Douro valley. All grapes are hand-harvested and co-fermented in stainless steel tanks then aged in tank, on lees, for 4.5 months with battonage for the first two weeks. Light lemon color with aromas and flavors of fresh citrus and ripe tropical fruits combines with subtle floral notes. The palate is refreshing with a powerful mineral core and refreshing finish. Enjoy with fresh vegetables drizzled with high quality olive oil and salt.
