Gianni Doglia - Bosco Donne - Barbera d'Asti 2022
Gianni Doglia is a small, 10-hectare family estate located in Castagnole delle Lanze in the Asti region of Piedmont. The estate is in its third generation of family leadership under Gianni and his sister, Paola. Gianni has made the conscious decision to remain a small family operation, which allows him to pay special attention to all aspects of the winemaking process, and ensures he is able to express the essence of his unique vineyards. Out of respect for the land and their family's future, Gianni and Paola practice sustainable viticulture by respecting soil diversity to promote microbial flora and fauna; eliminating use of chemical fertilizer, herbicides and pesticides; and managing and maintaining small wooded areas between the vineyards to increase the local wildlife population. They are members of The Green Experience, a sustainability initiative launched by producers in Piedmont that provides an accreditation that highlights natural agricultural techniques, conservation of the environment and encouragement of biodiversity. All Gianni's hard work has paid off with his recognition as Gambera Rosso's "Grower of the Year" in 2022!
Gianni’s Barbera d’Asti Bosco Donne is made from 100% Barbera, fermented in stainless steel to preserve its classic varietal character. In the glass, the wine is deep purple in color with a garnet rim. The nose is wonderfully aromatic with notes of rose, blackberries and black cherries dusted with exotic baking spices. The complexity to the aromas is beguiling: after one sniff, you can't help but keep your nose in the glass for a long, subtle inhale to appreciate all that is going on. The palate is marvelously expressive, full of super-charged, juicy fruits and loads of refreshment with bright acidity perfectly balanced by a soft mouthfeel with a classic Asti finish: long, mineral and full of energy. The versatility of this Barbera with food is one of its greatest strengths: enjoy with mushroom dishes, roasted or grilled fish, sausage ragú, pork chops, marinated London Broil, pasta in red sauce ... just about anything you can put on the table!
