Andreas von Canal, grandson of the last Baron von Heddesdorff, has run the Freiherr von Heddesdorff estate since 1984. The family has grown Riesling on the steep, terraced slopes of Winningen for nearly six centuries. In addition to holding two hectares of vines in the Uhlen vineyard — one of Germany's steepest — Heddesdorff farms small parcels in the Brückstück, Röttgen, and Domgarten vineyards. The wines are vinified in tank with indigenous yeasts to preserve the pure, slate-tinged fruit and zinging acidity inherent to wines from these incredible vineyard sites. In 2014, after training as a winemaker, working various internships and completing her viticultural studies in Geisenheim, Andreas' daugher, Katharina, began working at the estate.
The Heddesdorff Feinherb Riesling is made in an off-dry style, though the vibrant minerality keeps the citrus and stone fruit flavors fresh and lively while the residual sugar balances perfectly witht the zesty acidity and light body, creating a seemless drinking experience. Enjoy with seared scallops served alongside a mix of corn, bacon and onions.
