Located in Schweigen, in the southernmost part of Pfalz, Weingut Friedrich Becker crafts wines that are recognized as some of the finest in all of Germany. Like many of the estates around them, the property operated as a mixed-use farm for many generations, overseeing livestock, vineyards and orchards and selling away any products the family did not keep for themselves. In the mid-20th century, the family realized that the soils and slopes at the edge of the Palatinate Forest were best suited for viticulture and focused all their resources on winegrowing. In 1973, Fritz Becker Sr. stopped selling his grapes to the local co-op and began producing wine under the family label. Fritz Jr. took over winemaking at the estate in 2005, while his father continued to manage the vineyards. The property consists of 28 hectares under vine, with 70% of their vineyards grown on limestone-rich French soils; the German vineyards consist of marl and limestone soils.
Becker's Pinot Noir is composed of 20-45 year old fruit. Bright ruby red in the glass, this Pinot offers a dazzling bouquet of lightly-spiced red fruit mixed with sweet tobacco and forest floor. The palate is elegant and juicy with an abundance of wildberry, cherry and blackberry flavors. Tantalizing acidity and earthy minerality marry firm, ripe tannins, giving those succulent fruit flavors the perfect runway to coast to a long, textured finish. Enjoy with a mixed green salad topped with grilled portabello or grilled barbecue chicken.
