Ivan Enjingi is one of Croatia's superstar natural winemakers. His vineyards, spread out on 50 hectares in the Kutjevo appellation, overlook the Pozega valley. Ivan grows nine different varietals — planted along the slopes of Mt. Krndija in soils that vary from sandy loam to extreme rock — including Riesling, Zweigelt, Pinot Noir and Gewurztraminer. In fact, the Enjingi vineyards used to be the official vineyards of the Austrian Emperor and his crown. All of the vineyards are farmed organically with very low yields to help create wines that are a true expression of the land.
The Enjingi Zweigelt is grown on a mix of volcanic and sandy soils with white clay stones over a bedrock of slate and granite. The wine is fermented in stainless steel and aged for 18 months in Slavonian oak with a further 12 months of aging in bottle before release. Aromas and flavors of cherries, red plums and herbs are framed by soft, smooth tannins and an integrated acidity. The finish adds layers of chocolate, coffee and spice that round out the wine beautifully. Pair with grilled pork chops, roasted turkey or kulen (Slavonian air-dried pork and paprika sausage).
