The Sierra Foothills were home to California’s Gold Rush in the mid-1800’s, when scores of wide-eyed treasure seekers from around the world toiled in the mountains to find the Mother Lode and strike it rich. Prospecting is hard work, resulting in hordes of thirsty miners, and as a result, a small wine industry sprang up to quench their thirst. Over 170 years later, the Sierra Foothills are California’s premier collection of high-altitude, old-vine vineyards.
One of the most respected figures in the Sierra Foothills is Bill Easton of Domaine de la Terre Rouge. An original Rhône Ranger – a group of California farmers and winemakers specializing in growing and making wine from varietals found in France's Rhône Valley – Bill is famous for crafting expressive, age-worthy wines from classic varietals like Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre, as well as Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Every year, Bill Easton crafts his top Syrah, Ascent. All grapes are grown in selected Syrah sites scattered throughout the Sierra Nevada in granite and volcanic-based soils. Only 8 barrels are produced and spend 22 months in 100% new French oak barrels before bottle ageing. This is a deeply concentrated wine with dense layers of aromatic complexity. Loads of deeply concentrated, incredibly spicy fruit aromas fill the glass. On the palate, thick concentrated savor flavors, smoky wood tones, exotic spices, lush fruit, tempered minerality and fine tannins explode. Ascent has great structure and aging potential; drink now or cellar for a further 12 years.
