The name "La Dominique" comes from an 18th century owner of the Château, Jean-Baptiste Fontémoing, who christened the property in memory of the island in the Carribean. However, the history of the estate goes back to 1690, and since the first Saint-Émilion classification in 1955, Château La Dominique has been designated a Grand Cru Classé. The vineyards are planted to 81% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Franc and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon on 22 hectares of clay, gravel, limestone and sand soils in the north-west corner of Saint-Émilion on the border of Pomerol. All grapes are hand harvested and fermented in stainless steel, then matured in 60% new French oak barrels for 18 months. La Dominque is neighbors with such illustrious Châteaux as l'Evangile, la Conseillante, and Cheval Blanc, and because of this, it is one of the over-looked treasures of Saint-Émilion.
Château La Dominique pours a deep ruby in the glass with red highlights. Generous aromas of red berry fruits, tobacco and cedar explode from the glass. The first impression of tasting La Dominique is the audaciously raw power of the wine. But what is truly captivating about this wine, is how it maintains its beautiful acidity and precision in the face of such richness. Layers of concentrated and complex fruit, earth and wood flavors cascade across the palate, framed by firm, well-integrated tannins, leading into a luxurious, well-balanced finish that goes on and on and on. The wine is enthralling, disturbingly delicious, and above all, charming. It can be drunk now, but will improve over the next 10+ years with proper cellaring. You will not find a better quality wine in all of Saint-Émilion or Pomerol for this price!
