Château Coutet's winemaking history began in 1643, when Charles Le Guérin — known as Lord of Coutet — converted the estate into one of the first vineyards in the Sauternes appellation. None other than Thomas Jefferson described Château Coutet as "the best Sauternes in Barsac," and in 1855, the estate was classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé. Among the Château's prestigious owners is the Lur-Saluces family of Château d'Yquem, who managed the estate from just after the French Revolution until the 1920's. Since 1977, the Baly family has run the estate with the help of the winemaking team of Château Mouton Rothschild, who partnered with the Balys and Coutet in 1994.

The 2009 Château Coutet pours a beautiful golden color, with deep amber highlights. The nose is an intoxicating medley of ripe exotic and citrus fruits complemented with vanilla and a tinge of subtle and elegant floral aromas. On the palate, the wine is fleshy, round and concentrated with a perfect balance between power, freshness and finesse, enhanced by the persistent aromatic zests of citrus, mingled with notes of preserved apricot. The finish is dense and rich, yet with incredible refreshment and refinement. A truly marvelous Sauternes from an excellent vintage that is drinking beautifully now, yet will age well for another 10 years.
