Charles Père et Fille, a family estate located in Nantoux, have been grape-growers and winemakers in Burgundy for several generations. However, it wasn't until 1960, when the domaine started estate-bottling its wines, that they began to make a name for themselves. Everything at the estate is top-notch, from the work in the vineyards to the cellar and beyond. The domaine consists of 14 hectares of vines, 10 in the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune and the rest divided between Volnay, Pommard, Meursault and Beaune. Pascal Charles and his daughter, Pauline, take extensive measures to ensure the highest quality of all their wines, and the results speak for themselves.
The Charles Coteaux Bourguigonons blanc is a 50/50 blend of Chardonnay and Aligoté grown on 30-35 year old vines planted in soils of clay and limestone. The grapes are fermented completely in stainless steel, then aged — on lees — for a year, mostly in stainless steel with a fraction (5%) aged in seasoned oak barrels. The wine pours a mid-gold in the glass, emitting aromas of orchard fruit and wildflowers with a touch of citrus zest. The palate is full-bodied and awash with those fruit flavors, balanced by a dazzling interplay of fresh acidity and chalky minerality. This wine shines as an aperitif, though it is pretty versatile on the table. Enjoy with an assortment of seafood, especially shellfish. For a real treat, pair this beautiful white with Escargots de Bourgogne, snails with garlic and butter!
