Bürgerspital - Würzburger Rieslaner - Spätlese 2020
The Bürgerspital zum Heiligen Geist is one of the most historic and prestigious wine producers in Baden. This venerable foundation- still in operation after 700 years- was founded to provide medical and geriatric care to local residents. Bequeathed to the Würzburg by a private citizen in 1316, the estate was a founding member of the VDP* and can boast over 700 years of winemaking history, plus the world's oldest bottle of white wine (from vintage 1540!) Today, they produce benchmark examples of Silvaner, Riesling and Rieslaner, a late-ripening cross of Riesling and Silvaner.
This Spätlese is 100% Rieslaner grown on muschelkalk soils and fermented with native yeasts in stainless steel. It is decidedly sweet, but the sugar is deftly balanced by a racy acidity that keeps the wine refreshing, and the complex finish lingers for over a minute. Enjoy on its own either before or after a meal, or serve this with spicy dishes or custard desserts.
*The VDP, or Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter, is a German association of the country’s top estates which, through strict quality control, offers customers guarantees on quality.
