Marche is home to Rosso Piceno, a region that has enjoyed somewhat of a renaissance over the last twenty years. Small growers have been striking out on their own, trying to make a name for the local blend of Sangiovese and Montepulciano. The Brunori family was one of the first to stop selling grapes to the local cooperative and start producing wine from their own estate. They are now in their third generation of making some of the most vibrant and interesting wines in all of Italy. The vineyards of the Brunori estate encompass nine hectares of immaculately tended vines of Verdicchio, Sangiovese and Montepulciano. Sitting at 200 meters above sea level, the vines are rooted in limestone-rich soil. The Brunori's have always farmed without chemicals.
The Brunori Torquis — a blend of 70% Sangiovese and 30% Montepulciano — is an absolute delight! The grapes are fermented in stainless steel and aged in cement to preserve the wine's energy and freshness. This wine pours a mid-ruby color with an explosive nose loaded with ripe cherries, raspberries, fresh plums and red currants that intermingle with lovely notes of flowers and earth. The palate is focused with lovely berry and stone fruit flavors that are perfectly framed by firm tannins and a vibrant, refreshing acidity. The finish is clean, zesty and surprisingly complex, providing ample intrigue and zing to bring you back for another sip. Brunori's Torquis is an excellent companion for pizza night, though it would also be delicious with pasta in a meaty red sauce, roast meats or mushroom dishes.
