Alex Zahel is the 4th generation leader of Zahel, a Demeter-certified wine estate in Vienna, Austria. In 2005, Alex took over from his Uncle Richard — who has been a champion of Vienna's Gemischter Satz wine for over 30 years — though Richard still helps run the vineyards. With extensive practical and academic training in winemaking and business, Alex directs not only operations and sales, but also functions as the winemaker, having produced each vintage since 2006. Alex’s wife, Hilary, works alongside him at the winery while also supporting the team with strategic and creative projects. Together, this small, tightly knit team works hard to ensure their family business continues to grow.
Gemischter Satz is a Vienna speciality: a field blend of various white grapes co-planted in the city's vineyards, harvested and fermented together to produce a unique, singular wine style. The Zahel Gemischter Satz is a blend of Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Chardonnay, Grauburgunder, Weissburgunder and Traminer from the Nussdorf, Oberlaa and Mauer wine growing areas fermented and aged in all stainless steel tanks. Light lemon color with lovely aromas and flavors of white peach, apricot and pineapple. Light-bodied with zesty acidity and a crisp, refreshing finish, this is an ideal accompaniment to traditioan Vienna fare: schnitzel, cured meat, pickles and alpine cheeses.
