Tenuta Pietramora, established in 1999, is located in Colle Fagiano in Scansano, a commune in the Maremma. The estate consists of 11 hectares of vines — ten of Sangiovese and one of Merlot — at an altitude of 300 meters. The organic vineyards face the sea and are on Galestro: a rocky, schistous clay soil that produces excellent Sangiovese. The estate is owned by the family of Gaia Cerrito who, in addition to running the vineyards, winery and being a mother to four young children, is a certified sommelier, former restauranteur, owner and proprietor of a boutique hotel and a traveling wine lecturer. Wow.
Gaia rents a vineyard of Vermentino in the highest point of Saturnia, an area with tuff soils and moderate humidity. For three years, she tried to make a white wine, though the first two vintages of finished wine didn't meet her exacting standards. Then, in her third year, Gaia had her "Eureka!" moment when decided to harvest her rows at two different times and ripeness levels: the sun-side she picked later, when the grapes were almost over-ripe; and the shaded side she picked earlier, when the grapes were just barely ripe. Each harvest was vinified separately, then blended and aged in tank without malolactic fermentation. The result was exactly what Gaia wanted: a fresh, fruity and floral Vermentino that encapsulates the terroir of the Maremma. The name Limite derives from the contrast between the two different grapes: one ripened at the limit of a late harvest, the other at the limit of an early harvest. Light gold color with striking aromas of yellow plum, white flowers, fresh citrus fruits and Golden Delicious apples. The palate is a wonderful balance of vibrant acidity and plump texture with dazzling fruit concentration to complement an engaging savory, herbal undertone and complex mineral finish. A beautiful Vermentino to enjoy alongside grilled sardines with lemon and thyme.
