The Scala family has owned their vineyards for over 200 years, thought they didn't begin making estate wine until 1949. Today, the estate is run by Luigi Scala and his son, Francesco, who together aim to produce distinguished Calabrian wines. The vineyard is 18 hectares, planted to native varieties such as Greco Bianco — a different clone than the Greco di Tufo found in Campagnia — Gaglioppo, Magliocco, Mantonico and Greco Nero. The vines are cultivated on the hinterland plains and hills, on argillaceous and sandy soil. Since 2016 the vineyards have been certified organic.
Scala's Cirò Bianco is 100% Greco from vineyards located in Cirò about 100 to 150 meters above sea level from vines planted in 1997. All grapes are hand-harvested, destemmed, gently pressed, and fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks. Light lemon color with aromas of white flowers, citrus fruits and a pleasant note of sea spritz. On the palate, the wine is light bodied with plenty of freshness and zing to compliment the saline minearlity and fresh fruit flavors. Enjoy with spicy shrimp.
