Azienda Agricola Parla was founded in Serdiana, Sardinia in 1950. Today, Mario Parla — along with his wife, Rita, and their children Massimiliano, Elisabetta and Mariantonietta — is the third generation of his family to manage the estate. The winery continues to be family owned and the values of tradition and innovation are being passed down from Mario to the family's fourth generation. The estate consists of eight different vineyards with a total of 68 hectares under vine on soils of limestone, limestone-marl or white sand. Each vineyard is planted with varietals that are chosen according to the microclimate and soil type of the individual site. Pala practices organic farming in the vineyard and does not use chemical pesticides or fertilizers.
Monica is an indigenous Sardinian red grape variety that gets its name from monks who grew the grape around their monasteries: uva dei monaci became uva monaca which then became monica. Pala's 100% Monica comes from 30 year-old vines grown in calcareous soils which are fermented in stainless steel and aged for 6 months in underground cement tanks. In the glass the wine shows an intense ruby color with violet highlights. Aromas of licorice, dried herbs and baked stone fruits plume from the glass. On the palate, the wine is fresh and exciting with an alluring savory energy complemented by lovely fruit character. Well-balanced and inviting, enjoy this rare red with a plate of goat or sheeps milk cheeses or grilled white meats.
