Azienda Agricola Brezza Giacomo e Figli - Langhe Freisa 2021
The Brezza family has been making wine and farming vineyards in Barolo since 1885. Enzo is the fourth generation of the family to lead the estate, where they not only have an enviable holding of vineyards in Barolo including the Cru sites of Castellero, Sarmassa and the famous Cannubi, but they farm a total of twenty hectares planted to Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto, Freisa and Chardonnay. All of Brezza’s grapes are grown organically and hand-harvested. In the cellar, only native yeasts are used for fermentation and the wines undergo long macerations and extended aging in large Slavonian oak botti. Enzo may be firmly rooted in tradition, but his knowledge as an oenologist allows him to craft traditional wines that are clean, precise and among the best in all of Italy.
The Brezza Langhe Freisa is made from 100% Freisa, an indigenous Piedmontese varietal, that shares a parent-offspring relationship with Nebbiolo. Enzo grows his Freisa in Barolo near the Sarmassa vineyard. The wine is fermented and aged exclusively in stainless steel. It pours a mid-ruby with purple highlights displaying aromas and flavors of strawberries, cherries and purple flowers. On the palate the wine showcases a taught acidity and firm tannins. Brezza's Freisa exhibits freshness and vibrancy with lots of energy and structure. This is a wine that pairs wonderfully with a wide range of fatty foods.
