Agri Segretum is an organic 90-acre farm in the Todi DOC of Umbria. Founded by husband-and-wife Lorenzo de Monaco and Eileen Holland in 2008, the estate focuses on the indigenous varieties of the region: Sangrantino, Sangiovese, Malvasia Nera and Grechetto. All grapes are hand harvested and fermented spontaneously with native yeasts, with only manual work in the cellar. Lorenzo and Eileen strive for a more natural, authentic expression of their land; this dedication and hard work shines through brilliantly in their stellar wines.
The Freghino (which means “teenager” in Umbrian dialect) is a blend of 70% Sangiovese, 20 Colorino and 10% Malvasia Nera grown on clay-limestone soils. All grapes are hand harvested and fermented with native yeasts in stainless steel tanks, then aged in tank for 9 months. Freghino is true to its Sangiovese roots, though the addition of Malvasia and Colorino make a lighter, easy drinking red. Medium-bodied, with aromas and flavors of wild berries and fresh earth complemented by a vibrant acidity and moderate, fine-grained tannins. This is a great every day Italian table red, perfect to enjoy with meats, pasta and pizza.
