Domaine Changarnier — established in 1720 — is located in Monthelie. Behind several centuries of winegrowing tradition, the estate has been run by brothers, Claude and Antoine Changarnier since 2004. Together, they organically farm (since 2019) 5.5 hectares of vines planted in soils of clay-limestone, clay-loam and marl-limestone. Harvests are completed manually, grapes are sorted by hand and wines are vinified with minimal intervention. Aging takes place in barrel, 15-20% new, for 12 months, then bottled with little filtration.

Wonderful ripe sour cherry nose, then a no less appealing combination of creamy ripeness, fine tannins and lively acidity. Long, polished finish with an animating freshness that pulls you back for more. For all its charm at the front and in the middle of the medium-bodied palate, there's a positive firmness in the long finish. From two large blocks of 45-year-old vines, one with brown clay and the other with white clay soil. From biodynamically grown grapes. 25% whole-cluster fermentation, then matured in small cooperage of which 20% was new oak. Drink or hold.

The 2022 Monthélie Les Clous 1er Cru has fewer whole bunches than the Pierrefitte, around 20%. It has an attractive nose with red cherries, blackberry and light forest floor aromas, a touch of sea spray emerging with time. The medium-bodied palate has sapid red and black fruit laced with wild rose petals and allspice. Quite dense on the finish for a Monthélie; this will need some time but will be worth the wait.
