Domaine Reine Juliette is named after the ancient Roman road, Via Domitia, also known as Reine Juliette (named after a French queen), that connected France to Spain and was important in establishing viticulture in the Languedoc. This 100-hectare estate (of which only 20 hectares are planted to Picpoul on red-clay soils) is run by the 6th and 7th generations of the Alliès family, who look to make high quality wines with lower yields and conscientious vineyard work. What sets Domaine Reine Juliette apart from all other wines in the region is that 100% of the family's production is estate grown and bottled, which is a rarity in Picpoul de Pinet. The estate is also HVE certified (Haute Valeur Environnementale or High Environmental Value), a sustainability certification from the French Ministry of Agriculture.
Reine Juliette's Picpoul Noir is deep ruby in color, opening with inviting aromas of ripe red and black fruits — cherries, blackberries and red plum — interwoven with a hint of garrigue and a subtle saline minerality. The palate is vibrant yet balanced, showing moderate acidity that lifts the fruit while juicy, well-knit tannins provide a supple structure. The finish is fresh and savory, leaving lingering notes of dark fruit and mineral tension. Pair with seared tuna, herb-roasted pork tenderloin or a bowl of homemade spicy chili.
