Azienda Agricola Schirru was established in 2015 by brothers Marco and Michele Schirru. The estate is situated mainly in Nurri and the small, neighboring village of Orroli in central Sardinia. While the brothers initially began with separate career paths not related to viticulture, Marco and Michele united to reawaken their ancestral estate. Viticulture had been central to the interior of the island for centuries, though the vineyard area had been steadily decreasing (in the Schirru’s home village, there were 900 hectares in 1980, today one-tenth that amount). Not wanting to lose their heritage, history and the skills of artisanal work to be lost entirely, the brothers collaborated to keep their family’s property alive. Currently, they farm 4.5 hectares of old vines planted to endemic varietals: Vermentino and Nuragus for whites and Monica, Bovale and Cannonau for the reds. The brothers craft incredible wines that express the true spirit of Sardinia.
Schirru’s Fastìgiu is a lovely blend of Bovale Sardo, Bovale Grande and Monica. The name is Sardinian for “courtship” and it describes the beautiful interplay between the soft, delicate Monica grape and the rustic and robust Bovale grapes. This seamless union of varietals offers an inviting nose of bright berry and stone fruit aromas tinged with notes of dried rose petals and faint herbs. Juicy on the attack, the medium-bodied palate showcases gorgeous fruit flavor… golden raspberry and el Dorado plums married with a filigree acidity and soft, sensuous tannins. This ravishing rosso coasts to a long, mineral-tinged finish that leaves you longing for your next sip. Perfect for summer fare… prosciutto-wrapped melon and vegetable kebabs to start, then fire up the grill. Schirru’s Fastìgiu will partner wonderfully with any grilled, smoked or BBQ sauce-glazed meats.
