Château Maupague was established in 1991 when the property was acquired by seventh-generation winemakers Jean-Pierre and Gabriel Sumeire who saw the land's unbridled potential. The estate (Maupague) is named after the headquarters of the Roman Legion which was situated on the Sainte-Victoire Mountain. (Evidence of Roman wine cultivation on the property show the area's rich history dating back two millennia.) The Sainte-Victoire appellation possesses a unique microclimate. A profound continental influence combines with elevations higher that most in the Côtes de Provence enabling owner and winemaker Olivier Sumeire the perfect canvas to craft impeccable wines that showcase unrivaled aromatics, vibrance and purity.
Olivier and his sister Sophia — Gabriel's children — oversee this 120-hectare splendor, sustainably farming (organic practice used whenever possible) their vines in the estate's clay-limestone soils which are interspersed with deposits of ancient alluvial gravel. The vineyard is planted to Rolle (Vermentino) and Ugni Blanc for their whites and Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault for their rosés and reds. Château Maupague produces exceptional wines from this "Grand Cru" appellation, wines that are bright, fruit-forward and terroir-driven, (and dangerously drinkable).
Château Maupague's Sainte-Victoire Rosé — a beautiful blend of Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault — is a revelation! Resplendent light coral in color, intoxicating aromas of alpine strawberry, tangerine and white nectarine billow from the glass, accented with hints of wet stone and orange blossom. The moment this rosé touches your lips, waves of light berry, stone and citrus fruits wash over your palate. Incredibly well-composed, these fruits are enveloped by a soft, yet persistent, acidity and a lovely, saline minerality which helps this delectable wine glide effortlessly towards a refreshing, mouthwatering finish. You will have little problem enjoying this rosé on its own, it is an absolute quaffer: unbelievably thirst-quenching and invigorating. Though, I cannot wait to pair this rosé with grilled prawns along side a tomato and cucumber salad, fresh from my garden.
