Joao Paul Gouveia is a viticulturist who works with many properties in Portugal's Dão region. Pedro Cancela is his family's vineyards which are situated on the slopes above the Dão River. Most of the vineyard is planted to the red grapes Touriga Nacional, Alfrocheiro, Jaen, and Roriz. He also grows Encruzado and Mavasia Fina for white wines. His wines are highly polished, modern examples of the great quality that can be had in this region of Portugal.
The Pedra Cancela Tinto pours a brilliant ruby red marked with garnet at its rim. This Tinto offers and intense bouquet of dark red and black berry and stone fruits mixed with a spiced cocoa powder. The medium-bodied palate is soft and round, possessing juicy flavors of raspberries, blackberries and plum. These fruits are supported by suave tannins and a fresh acidity that help guide this red to a beautifully long finish. Pair with braised pork shanks or grilled steak or sausages.

Wood aging marks this solid wine with rich, full black fruits and a strong texture of tannins. The wine is still young, with acidity and texture still to finally come together. Drink from 2025.
