Domaine de Suremain — a seven-generation winemaking estate located in the heart of Mercurey — was founded in 1870 by Charles de Suremain when he organized the family’s farms into one domaine. Charles’ son Edouard spearheaded a group of winemakers who worked to establish the Mercurey appellation in 1923, one of Burgundy’s first appellations. In 1979, Yves de Suremain and his wife Marie-Hélène built a small farm neighboring Domaine de Suremain before taking over the entire estate in 1993. Since, the couple has sustainably farmed the property’s eighteen hectares, cultivating Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in their clay-limestone soils. Their son Loïc joined them in 2005 and is currently the estate’s primary winemaker. All vineyard work is carried out by hand and vinification is performed on a cru-by-cru basis.
